Mindfulness Tools in Bellevue Pre-K: Breathing and Calm Corners

Get In Touch

In today’s busy world, even young children experience big emotions. Learning how to pause, breathe, and reset is a powerful skill — especially before entering kindergarten. For families searching for a high-quality pre-K program in Bellevue, social-emotional development is just as important as early academics.

At Lil’ People’s World, mindfulness tools like breathing exercises and calm corners are thoughtfully integrated into our pre-K classrooms. These strategies help children build confidence, emotional regulation, and readiness for elementary school.

Why Mindfulness Matters in Pre-K

Pre-kindergarten students are learning to:

  • Follow multi-step directions
  • Work in small groups
  • Solve peer conflicts
  • Transition between activities
  • Manage frustration independently

Without self-regulation skills, even strong academic learners can struggle. Mindfulness practices give children practical tools to manage big feelings in healthy, age-appropriate ways.

Teaching Breathing Techniques to Young Children

Breathing exercises may sound advanced, but preschoolers can learn simple, effective strategies.

Balloon Breathing

Children imagine blowing up a balloon:

  1. Take a slow, deep breath in.
  2. Hold for a moment.
  3. Slowly “blow up the balloon” with a long exhale.

This visual makes deep breathing concrete and fun.

Five-Finger Breathing

Children trace each finger while breathing in and out slowly. This combines tactile input with calm breathing, supporting sensory regulation.

Smell the Flower, Blow Out the Candle

A classic early childhood technique:

  • “Smell the flower” (inhale deeply).
  • “Blow out the candle” (slow exhale).

These simple tools empower children to calm their bodies before frustration escalates.

What Is a Calm Corner?

A calm corner is a designated, cozy area within the classroom where children can take a break and regulate emotions.

In our Bellevue pre-K classrooms, calm corners include:

  • Soft seating or cushions
  • Visual feelings charts
  • Sensory tools like stress balls
  • Books about emotions
  • Quiet lighting

Importantly, calm corners are not punishment spaces. They are supportive environments where children can reset and return to learning.

Supporting Emotional Development Through Creative Curriculum

Our research-based Creative Curriculum emphasizes whole-child development. Social-emotional learning is woven into daily routines through:

  • Morning meetings
  • Group discussions about feelings
  • Role-playing social situations
  • Positive guidance strategies
  • Teacher modeling of respectful communication

Mindfulness tools complement academic learning, helping children build resilience alongside early literacy and math skills.

Preparing for Kindergarten With Confidence

Elementary classrooms require greater independence and emotional control. By practicing mindfulness in pre-K, children learn to:

  • Pause before reacting
  • Use words instead of physical responses
  • Ask for help appropriately
  • Transition smoothly between tasks
  • Focus during instruction

These skills directly support kindergarten readiness.

Partnering With Bellevue Families

Strong communication between home and school strengthens emotional growth. We encourage families to reinforce mindfulness tools at home by:

  • Practicing simple breathing exercises together
  • Creating a small “calm space” at home
  • Modeling emotional vocabulary
  • Talking about feelings openly

Consistency between home and childcare environments builds confidence and security.

A Nurturing Pre-K Environment on the Eastside

Our pre-K program offers:

  • Low teacher-to-child ratios
  • Safe, clean, and organized classrooms
  • Research-based curriculum
  • Individualized learning plans

We believe that teaching children how to manage their emotions is just as important as teaching letters and numbers.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
