Conflict Resolution in Preschool: Coaching Kindness in Bellevue

Get In Touch

Learning to get along with others is one of the most important parts of early childhood. At Lil’ People’s World in Bellevue, we believe that social and emotional learning is just as valuable as academic growth. Preschoolers are still learning how to share, take turns, and express emotions, so our teachers guide them through real-life moments with patience, empathy, and encouragement.

By focusing on conflict resolution and coaching kindness, we help children develop lifelong skills for communication, cooperation, and friendship.

Why Conflict Is Part of Learning

It’s natural for young children to have disagreements. Whether two friends both want the same toy or a game doesn’t go as planned, these moments provide meaningful opportunities to practice empathy and problem-solving.

At Lil’ People’s World, we use the Creative Curriculum to nurture social-emotional development alongside cognitive and physical growth. Teachers model calm communication and guide children toward understanding how their choices affect others.

Our goal is not to avoid conflict, but to help children learn how to navigate it with respect and compassion.

Our Approach to Conflict Resolution

We use a calm, consistent approach that helps children build emotional awareness and self-control. Teachers guide children through these steps:

  1. Pause and breathe – Taking a moment helps everyone calm down.
  2. Identify feelings – Teachers ask, “How do you feel?” and “How do you think your friend feels?”
  3. Listen and share – Each child gets a chance to explain what happened.
  4. Problem-solve together – Children brainstorm fair solutions with gentle teacher support.
  5. Make amends – Saying sorry, offering help, or finding another way to play reinforces kindness and responsibility.

This approach teaches children that words are powerful tools — and that kindness can repair and strengthen friendships.

Coaching Kindness Every Day

Kindness is a skill that grows through modeling and practice. In our Bellevue classrooms, teachers weave empathy and cooperation into daily routines by:

  • Praising helpful and caring behavior (“I like how you shared that toy with your friend.”)
  • Reading stories that highlight friendship and understanding
  • Using role-play to practice problem-solving skills
  • Encouraging children to notice when others need help or comfort
  • Celebrating teamwork through group activities and play

By integrating these habits into each day, children learn that kindness isn’t just a rule — it’s part of who they are.

Partnering With Families to Build Social Skills

Families play a big role in helping children learn empathy and communication. At home, parents can:

  • Talk about feelings during everyday situations
  • Model calm problem-solving during disagreements
  • Praise kindness when you see it (“That was so thoughtful of you to help your brother.”)
  • Use books or bedtime stories to discuss how characters resolve conflicts

When home and school work together, children learn that respect, patience, and understanding matter everywhere.

Building Emotionally Ready Learners in Bellevue

At Lil’ People’s World, we believe emotional intelligence is the foundation for lifelong success. When children learn how to handle conflict with kindness, they also develop confidence, cooperation, and self-awareness — skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.

Since 1994, our family-owned childcare and early learning centers have proudly served Bellevue, North Seattle, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities. Guided by the Creative Curriculum, we create nurturing, respectful environments where every child is seen, heard, and valued.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
