Creative Curriculum at Lil’ People’s World: A Parent’s Guide

Get In Touch

When choosing a childcare or preschool program, many parents ask an important question: How will my child learn — and will they be truly prepared for kindergarten? At Lil’ People’s World, the answer lies in our use of the Creative Curriculum, a research-based framework designed to support whole-child development through purposeful play and hands-on learning.

Serving families across North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, our early learning centers use the Creative Curriculum to nurture confident, capable, and curious learners from infancy through pre-K.

Here’s what every parent should know.

What Is the Creative Curriculum?

The Creative Curriculum is a nationally recognized early childhood education approach built on decades of research about how young children learn best.

Rather than focusing on worksheets or rote memorization, the Creative Curriculum emphasizes:

  • Learning through play and exploration
  • Strong teacher-child interactions
  • Hands-on discovery
  • Social-emotional development
  • Individualized instruction

This approach ensures children develop not only academic skills but also the confidence and independence needed for long-term success.

Why Play-Based Learning Works

Research consistently shows that young children learn best when they are actively engaged. In our classrooms, play is intentional and connected to developmental goals.

Through guided play, children learn to:

  • Solve problems
  • Build language and vocabulary
  • Practice early math skills
  • Develop creativity
  • Strengthen social skills
  • Build persistence and focus

At Lil’ People’s World, play is purposeful — every activity supports growth in meaningful ways.

The Core Areas of Development

The Creative Curriculum focuses on several key areas that prepare children for kindergarten and beyond.

Social–Emotional Development

Children develop critical relationship skills by learning how to:

  • Cooperate and share
  • Express emotions appropriately
  • Build friendships
  • Resolve simple conflicts
  • Develop confidence and independence

These skills are essential for thriving in a kindergarten classroom.

Language and Early Literacy

Strong literacy skills begin long before formal reading instruction. In our preschool and pre-K programs, children:

  • Listen to and discuss stories
  • Explore letter sounds and vocabulary
  • Practice early writing through drawing and labeling
  • Engage in dramatic play and storytelling

These experiences build the foundation for confident readers.

Early Math and Cognitive Skills

Children develop problem-solving skills through hands-on math and science exploration, including:

  • Counting and number recognition
  • Sorting and pattern building
  • Comparing sizes and quantities
  • Exploring cause and effect

This builds critical thinking skills that support academic success.

Physical Development

Movement is a vital part of early learning. Children strengthen both fine and gross motor skills through:

  • Outdoor play
  • Building and block activities
  • Art and drawing
  • Music and movement games

Physical development supports coordination, confidence, and overall health.

What a Creative Curriculum Classroom Looks Like

In a Lil’ People’s World early learning center, classrooms are intentionally organized into learning areas that encourage exploration and independence.

You may see:

  • A block center for building and spatial learning
  • An art area for creativity and self-expression
  • A dramatic play space for imaginative role-play
  • A library corner for early literacy development
  • A science and discovery area for hands-on exploration

Teachers guide learning by asking open-ended questions and encouraging children to think, explore, and share ideas.

Individualized Learning for Every Child

Every child develops at their own pace. The Creative Curriculum allows teachers to observe children’s interests and milestones, then adapt activities to meet individual needs.

At Lil’ People’s World, we:

  • Conduct ongoing developmental observations
  • Create individualized learning goals
  • Communicate regularly with families
  • Adjust activities to support each child’s growth

This personalized approach helps children feel confident and successful.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
