Eco-Friendly Practices in Bellevue Childcare: Reduce, Reuse, Learn

Get In Touch

Sustainability isn’t just a trend in the Pacific Northwest — it’s a community value. Families across North Seattle, Bellevue, and Kirkland appreciate early learning environments that support both children and the planet. In childcare and preschool programs, eco-friendly practices not only reduce waste but also teach children how to care for the world around them.

At Lil’ People’s World, we integrate sustainable habits into daily routines to help children build lifelong environmental awareness. Here’s how childcare programs across the Eastside are reducing waste, reusing materials, and helping young learners understand their role in protecting nature.

Why Eco-Friendly Practices Matter in Early Learning

Early childhood is the perfect time to establish positive habits. By introducing sustainability through simple, meaningful routines, children learn:

  • Respect for natural resources
  • Responsibility for shared spaces
  • How everyday choices impact the environment
  • Appreciation for nature during outdoor play

As a result, eco-friendly habits become part of a child’s identity, not just a school rule.

Reduce: Making Mindful Environmental Choices

Reducing waste starts with thoughtful daily routines that minimize what ends up in landfills.

Classroom Strategies

  • Using reusable dishware for snacks
  • Serving water from refillable pitchers
  • Turning off lights when leaving the room
  • Printing only when needed
  • Choosing bulk supplies to reduce packaging

How Children Learn to “Reduce”

Teachers talk about using “just what we need,” whether that’s paper, paint, or water during handwashing. Over time, children begin making these choices independently.

Reuse: Extending the Life of Materials

Reusable materials are a cornerstone of eco-friendly classrooms. They also encourage creativity and problem-solving.

Examples of Reusable Materials

  • Paper towel rolls
  • Fabric scraps
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Lids, bottle caps, and containers
  • Old magazines for cutting practice

These items support STEM learning, fine motor development, and imaginative play — all while reducing waste.

Benefits for Children

When children see materials used again and again, they begin to understand resourcefulness, experimentation, and innovation. They become creative thinkers who see possibility everywhere.

Learn: Connecting Sustainability to Daily Exploration

Outdoor classrooms across the Eastside provide endless opportunities to learn about nature and environmental care.

Nature-Based Learning Activities

  • Gardening and watering plants
  • Observing local wildlife
  • Exploring natural loose parts (stones, sticks, leaves)
  • Composting fruit scraps from snack time

These activities introduce basic science concepts while nurturing empathy for living things.

Storytime That Supports Sustainability

Books about recycling, animals, weather, and Earth care help children make connections between the classroom and the world around them. Teachers often pair these books with hands-on activities to reinforce understanding.

Family Partnerships: Sustainability at Home and School

Eco-friendly habits grow stronger when families and childcare programs work together. Simple home–school routines include:

  • Sending a reusable water bottle
  • Packing lunches with minimal packaging
  • Bringing gently used clothing or books for classroom reuse
  • Reinforcing recycling practices at home

Because young children learn best through consistency, shared habits strengthen their understanding and responsibility.

Creating Eco-Friendly Outdoor Spaces

Outdoor learning environments can reflect sustainability, too.

Programs often include:

  • Raised garden beds
  • Native plants that support pollinators
  • Rainwater-collection barrels
  • Natural play materials rather than plastic-only options

These outdoor spaces become living classrooms where children can see the effects of their care and stewardship.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
