Healthy Habits: Nutrition, Snacks, and Allergy-Aware Menus

Get In Touch

Healthy nutrition plays an essential role in a child’s growth and development. During the early years, children are learning lifelong habits that affect their health, energy levels, and ability to focus during learning activities. At Lil’ People’s World Early Learning Centers, we support children’s well-being by providing balanced meals, nutritious snacks, and allergy-aware menus designed to keep every child safe and healthy.

Serving families across North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, our childcare and preschool programs encourage healthy habits that support both physical development and learning.

Why Nutrition Matters in Early Childhood

Young children need proper nutrition to fuel their growing bodies and minds. Healthy meals and snacks support:

  • Brain development and cognitive growth
  • Strong immune systems
  • Healthy physical development
  • Improved focus and energy for learning
  • Positive eating habits that last a lifetime

A well-balanced nutrition plan helps children stay energized for the active days they experience in childcare, toddler programs, preschool, and pre-K classrooms.

Balanced Meals and Nutritious Snacks

At Lil’ People’s World, we believe that meals and snacks should provide both nutrition and variety. Our menus are designed to include foods that support healthy development while encouraging children to try new flavors.

Healthy childcare meals often include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains such as brown rice or whole wheat bread
  • Lean proteins like chicken, beans, or eggs
  • Dairy or calcium-rich alternatives
  • Water and milk as primary beverages

Nutritious snacks help maintain children’s energy between meals and may include items such as yogurt, fruit slices, whole grain crackers, or vegetables with healthy dips.

Encouraging Positive Eating Habits

Mealtimes in an early learning center are also opportunities for children to develop important life skills. Teachers guide children in building healthy habits through positive and supportive routines.

During meals, children practice:

  • Sitting together during group meals
  • Trying new foods in a supportive environment
  • Learning table manners
  • Developing independence while eating
  • Listening to their hunger and fullness cues

These experiences help children develop a positive relationship with food.

Allergy-Aware Menus for Child Safety

Food allergies are an important consideration in any licensed childcare center. At Lil’ People’s World, we take food safety seriously and work closely with families to ensure every child’s needs are met.

Our allergy-aware practices include:

  • Identifying and documenting food allergies during enrollment
  • Adjusting menus to accommodate dietary restrictions
  • Clearly labeling foods when necessary
  • Training staff to recognize allergy symptoms
  • Following safety procedures to prevent cross-contact

These steps help ensure that children with allergies can safely participate in mealtimes.

Supporting Cultural and Dietary Needs

Families often have cultural traditions or dietary preferences that influence their child’s meals. High-quality childcare and preschool programs aim to respect these differences whenever possible.

Our educators work with families to understand:

  • Cultural food preferences
  • Dietary restrictions
  • Vegetarian or alternative meal needs
  • Religious dietary guidelines

Respecting family preferences helps create an inclusive and supportive environment for all children.

Teaching Children About Healthy Choices

Early learning environments are ideal places for introducing children to healthy food habits. Teachers often incorporate nutrition into classroom learning activities.

Children may explore topics such as:

  • Where fruits and vegetables come from
  • How different foods help our bodies grow
  • Simple cooking or food preparation activities
  • Gardening or plant exploration projects

These experiences help children become curious about food and more willing to try healthy options.

Communication With Families

Parents appreciate knowing what their child is eating during the day. At Lil’ People’s World, we keep families informed about meals and snacks.

Families may receive updates that include:

  • Daily meal and snack reports
  • Menu schedules
  • Notes about food preferences or allergies
  • Communication with teachers about eating habits

This partnership helps families support healthy habits both at home and in childcare.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
