Healthy Hygiene Habits in Childcare: Handwashing Routines in Bellevue

Get In Touch

At Lil’ People’s World in Bellevue, keeping children healthy and safe is at the heart of everything we do. One of the simplest — yet most effective — ways to prevent illness and teach lifelong health habits is through consistent, fun, and engaging handwashing routines.

From infants to preschoolers, our classrooms integrate hygiene lessons into daily activities, helping children understand not just how to wash their hands but why it matters.

Why Handwashing Is So Important in Childcare

Children learn and play through touch — exploring toys, art materials, books, and nature. While this hands-on learning is essential for development, it also means that germs can spread easily if proper hygiene isn’t practiced.

At Lil’ People’s World, we follow Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and public health guidelines to keep classrooms clean and children healthy. Regular handwashing helps:

  • Reduce the spread of cold, flu, and other common germs
  • Protect children with developing immune systems
  • Model healthy habits children will carry for life
  • Create a cleaner, more comfortable classroom for everyone

Our Daily Handwashing Routine

Handwashing is built into our daily rhythm, not treated as a chore. Teachers guide children step by step and make the process engaging through songs, visuals, and gentle reminders.

Children wash their hands:

  • Upon arrival at school
  • Before and after meals or snacks
  • After outdoor play or art activities
  • After using the restroom or diaper changes
  • After coughing, sneezing, or touching their face
  • Before rest time and when returning from outside play

By practicing together throughout the day, children begin to see handwashing as part of their natural routine — just like reading, sharing, or circle time.

Making Handwashing Fun and Educational

We believe good habits stick best when learning is joyful. Our teachers use creative ways to keep children engaged in hygiene routines, such as:

  • Singing short songs while washing to make sure they scrub for at least 20 seconds
  • Using child-friendly posters that show the proper steps
  • Talking about “germs we can’t see” in age-appropriate ways
  • Encouraging children to be “handwashing helpers” for their classmates

This approach not only promotes cleanliness but also supports social-emotional growth, independence, and responsibility.

Clean Environments Support Healthy Habits

Beyond handwashing, our Bellevue childcare center maintains high standards of cleanliness and sanitation. Classrooms are disinfected daily, toys are rotated and sanitized frequently, and staff model healthy behavior throughout the day.

We also communicate openly with families — reminding them when to keep children home due to illness and providing updates on classroom health guidelines when needed.

Building Lifelong Wellness Together

Healthy hygiene isn’t just about cleanliness — it’s about teaching children to care for themselves and their community. By working together, families and educators help children build habits that support lifelong wellness.

At Lil’ People’s World, we’re proud to provide a nurturing, research-based learning environment that prioritizes safety, health, and growth. Whether your child is in infant care, a toddler program, preschool, or pre-kindergarten, you can count on our experienced teachers to make hygiene education part of everyday learning.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
