Healthy Teeth Week in Bellevue: Brushing and Smiles

Get In Touch

Teaching children about healthy habits starts early, and one of the most important habits they can learn is how to take care of their teeth. During Healthy Teeth Week at Lil’ People’s World Early Learning Centers, children explore fun and educational activities that teach them about brushing, healthy foods, and bright smiles.

For families searching for trusted childcare, preschool, and early learning programs in Bellevue and nearby Eastside communities, programs that support health and hygiene help children develop lifelong habits that promote overall well-being.

Why Dental Health Matters in Early Childhood

Good dental hygiene begins in the early years. Teaching children how to brush properly and care for their teeth helps prevent cavities and supports healthy development.

Early dental health education helps children learn:

  • The importance of brushing teeth daily
  • How food choices affect teeth
  • Healthy hygiene routines
  • Confidence in self-care habits
  • Awareness of how to maintain a healthy smile

These lessons support children’s physical health and self-care skills, which are important parts of early childhood development.

What Is Healthy Teeth Week?

Healthy Teeth Week is a special classroom theme where children learn about dental care through fun activities, songs, and hands-on demonstrations.

During the week, children may explore topics such as:

  • Why teeth are important
  • How to brush and floss properly
  • Which foods help keep teeth healthy
  • How dentists help care for our smiles

These lessons make dental health exciting and easy for young children to understand.

Learning How to Brush Properly

One of the highlights of Healthy Teeth Week is learning the steps of proper tooth brushing. Teachers guide children through simple routines that help them understand how to care for their teeth.

Children learn:

  • How to hold a toothbrush correctly
  • How to brush the front and back of teeth
  • How long brushing should last
  • Why brushing before bed is important

Teachers often use large tooth models and demonstration toothbrushes to show the correct brushing motions in a fun and interactive way.

Fun Activities That Teach Dental Care

Healthy Teeth Week includes many playful learning activities designed to keep children engaged while teaching important habits.

Activities may include:

  • Brushing demonstrations with toy teeth models
  • Songs about brushing and smiling
  • Storybooks about visiting the dentist
  • Art projects featuring happy smiles
  • Sorting healthy foods that help teeth stay strong

These activities help children remember healthy habits while encouraging participation and curiosity.

Connecting Healthy Habits to Nutrition

Children also learn how food choices can affect their teeth. Teachers talk about which foods help keep teeth strong and which foods should be enjoyed in moderation.

Children explore examples such as:

Healthy choices:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Milk and cheese
  • Whole grains

Foods to limit:

  • Sugary candies
  • Sticky sweets
  • Sugary drinks

By connecting nutrition with dental health, children begin to understand how everyday choices affect their bodies.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
