Licensing & Accreditation: What Parents Should Ask

Get In Touch

Choosing the right childcare or preschool program is one of the most important decisions parents make. Safety, education quality, and staff qualifications all play a major role in your child’s early development. One of the best ways to evaluate a childcare center is by understanding its licensing and accreditation standards.

At Lil’ People’s World Early Learning Centers, we believe parents should feel confident asking questions about safety, staff training, and program quality. Serving families across North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, our licensed childcare centers follow established guidelines designed to protect and support every child.

Why Licensing Matters in Childcare

Childcare licensing ensures that early learning centers meet state regulations for health, safety, and educational standards. In Washington State, licensed childcare providers must follow strict guidelines related to supervision, staff qualifications, classroom safety, and facility maintenance.

A licensed childcare center typically meets requirements such as:

  • Background checks for all staff members
  • Health and safety standards for facilities
  • Age-appropriate teacher-to-child ratios
  • Ongoing staff training in early childhood education
  • Emergency preparedness and safety procedures

These regulations help ensure children are cared for in a safe, structured, and well-supervised environment.

What Is Accreditation in Early Childhood Education?

While licensing is required, accreditation is an additional level of quality recognition that some childcare centers pursue voluntarily. Accreditation organizations evaluate programs based on higher standards for curriculum, teacher qualifications, and classroom environments.

Accreditation often focuses on areas such as:

  • Research-based educational practices
  • Continuous improvement in teaching methods
  • Strong family engagement and communication
  • Child development assessments and learning goals
  • High-quality learning environments

Programs that follow structured educational approaches—such as the Creative Curriculum used at Lil’ People’s World—often align closely with these high standards.

Questions Parents Should Ask When Touring a Childcare Center

When visiting an early learning center in North Seattle, Bellevue, or Kirkland, asking the right questions can help families feel confident about their decision.

Here are some important questions parents may want to ask.

Is the Childcare Center Licensed?

Parents should confirm that the childcare provider is fully licensed and follows all state regulations. A reputable center will be transparent about licensing and safety policies.

What Are the Teacher-to-Child Ratios?

Low teacher-to-child ratios allow educators to provide more individual attention, which supports both safety and learning.

What Training Do Teachers Receive?

Ask about staff qualifications, including:

  • Early childhood education training
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Ongoing professional development

Experienced educators help create a supportive learning environment for children.

What Curriculum Do You Use?

A research-based curriculum helps ensure children receive a balanced early education. Programs using structured approaches—such as the Creative Curriculum—focus on both academic skills and social-emotional development.

How Do You Communicate With Families?

Strong communication between teachers and parents helps families stay informed about their child’s development.

Parents may ask about:

  • Daily activity updates
  • Developmental assessments
  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • Communication apps or reports

What Safety Procedures Are in Place?

Safety should always be a priority. Families may want to ask about:

  • Secure building entry systems
  • Emergency preparedness plans
  • Safety drills and procedures
  • Health and sanitation policies

These practices help ensure children are protected throughout the day.

The Importance of Transparency and Trust

High-quality childcare providers welcome questions from families. Transparency builds trust and helps parents feel comfortable with their childcare decision.

At Lil’ People’s World, we encourage families to tour our classrooms, meet our educators, and learn about the systems we use to support children’s development.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
