Math in Everyday Play: Counting, Sorting, and Patterns

Get In Touch

When parents begin searching for the best preschool in North Seattle or a trusted early learning center in Bellevue or Kirkland, one common question comes up: How will my child learn math?

The answer might surprise you.

At Lil’ People’s World, serving North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, math isn’t taught through drills or worksheets. Instead, it’s woven naturally into everyday play. Guided by our research-based Creative Curriculum, we help children build strong math foundations through hands-on exploration, movement, and meaningful real-world experiences.

Because in early childhood education, math is everywhere.

Why Early Math Skills Matter

Research shows that early math skills are one of the strongest predictors of later academic success. But in preschool and pre-K, math looks very different than it does in elementary school.

Young children build math understanding through:

  • Counting everyday objects
  • Sorting by color, size, or shape
  • Recognizing patterns
  • Comparing quantities (more/less)
  • Measuring during play
  • Exploring shapes and spatial relationships

These foundational skills support kindergarten readiness and build confidence for future learning.

Counting in Everyday Moments

Counting is often a child’s first introduction to math — and it happens naturally throughout the day in our childcare and preschool programs.

How We Practice Counting

In our North Seattle, Bellevue, and Kirkland classrooms, children count:

  • Steps as they walk outside
  • Blocks as they build towers
  • Snacks during mealtime
  • Friends during circle time
  • Jumps during movement activities

Counting in meaningful contexts helps children understand that numbers represent real quantities — not just memorized sequences.

In our toddler program, counting may look like singing number songs or counting stuffed animals. In pre-K, it expands to counting by groups, simple addition concepts, and number recognition.

Sorting: Building Logic and Reasoning

Sorting is an essential early math skill that strengthens critical thinking.

Children might sort:

  • Buttons by color
  • Leaves by size
  • Toys by type
  • Shapes by sides
  • Animals by habitat

Sorting activities help children notice similarities and differences — building logical reasoning skills that extend far beyond math.

For families seeking nurturing infant care in Bellevue or a supportive toddler program in North Seattle, sorting begins early through sensory bins and simple object exploration.

Patterns: The Foundation of Algebraic Thinking

It may sound advanced, but pattern recognition is the beginning of algebraic thinking.

In our preschool classrooms, children explore patterns through:

  • Bead stringing (red, blue, red, blue)
  • Clapping rhythms
  • Nature walks (leaf, rock, leaf, rock)
  • Movement games
  • Calendar routines

Recognizing and creating patterns strengthens memory, prediction skills, and problem-solving abilities.

Living in the Pacific Northwest gives us wonderful opportunities to incorporate natural materials into pattern play — connecting math to the world children see around them in North Seattle and across the Eastside.

Math in Infant Care and Toddler Programs

Math begins long before preschool.

In our infant care classrooms, math foundations are built through:

  • Stacking and nesting toys
  • Exploring big vs. small
  • Filling and dumping containers
  • Cause-and-effect play

In toddler programs, children expand into:

  • Simple counting
  • Matching games
  • Comparing sizes
  • Beginning shape recognition

These early experiences strengthen brain development during critical growth years.

Supporting Whole-Child Development Through Math

At Lil’ People’s World, math isn’t isolated — it’s integrated.

While children count, sort, and build patterns, they are also developing:

  • Language skills (describing quantities and shapes)
  • Social skills (taking turns, collaborating)
  • Fine motor control (stringing beads, stacking blocks)
  • Confidence and independence

Our low teacher-to-child ratios ensure individualized attention and encouragement throughout each learning experience.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
