Role of Choice Boards in Bellevue Classrooms

Get In Touch

In high-quality early learning environments, independence doesn’t happen by accident — it’s intentionally taught. One of the most effective tools we use in our Bellevue classrooms to support independence, confidence, and decision-making is the choice board.

At Lil’ People’s World, serving Bellevue, North Seattle, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, choice boards are a daily part of our infant care, toddler programs, preschool, and pre-K classrooms. These simple yet powerful visual tools help children take ownership of their learning while supporting social-emotional growth and kindergarten readiness.

What Is a Choice Board?

A choice board is a visual display that presents children with structured options during learning or play time. Options are typically represented with pictures and words so children at various developmental levels can participate.

In a Bellevue preschool classroom, a choice board might include:

  • Art center
  • Blocks and building
  • Dramatic play
  • Reading nook
  • Science table
  • Writing center

Instead of being assigned to an activity, children select where they would like to work within teacher-guided parameters.

Why Choice Matters in Early Childhood

Young children thrive when they feel a sense of control within safe boundaries. Offering structured choices helps children:

  • Build decision-making skills
  • Develop responsibility
  • Strengthen independence
  • Increase engagement
  • Practice self-regulation

When children choose their activity, they are often more invested and focused.

Supporting Social-Emotional Growth

Choice boards also help reduce classroom conflicts. When children clearly see available options and understand expectations, transitions become smoother.

In our Bellevue classrooms, teachers guide children through:

  • Checking the board for available spaces
  • Respecting center limits
  • Making a new choice if a center is full
  • Cleaning up before transitioning

These routines build patience, flexibility, and cooperation — essential social-emotional skills for kindergarten readiness.

Academic Benefits of Choice Boards

Choice-based learning supports academic growth across multiple domains.

Literacy Development

Children may choose the writing center to practice letters, create stories, or label drawings.

Math Exploration

The block area supports counting, measuring, patterning, and spatial reasoning.

Science Inquiry

Discovery centers encourage observation, classification, and experimentation.

Creative Expression

Art and dramatic play allow children to explore storytelling, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Through our research-based Creative Curriculum, teachers intentionally design each center to meet developmental goals while keeping learning playful and engaging.

What This Looks Like in a Bellevue Preschool

In our classrooms serving Bellevue and the greater Eastside, choice boards are paired with:

  • Clear daily routines
  • Visual schedules
  • Low teacher-to-child ratios
  • Ongoing observation and assessment

Teachers monitor children’s choices to ensure balanced development. If a child consistently selects the same area, educators gently encourage exploration of new experiences to broaden skills.

Choice is never chaotic — it is structured, purposeful, and supported.

Preparing Children for Kindergarten

Families searching for the best preschool in Bellevue often ask how programs foster independence. Choice boards directly support readiness by helping children learn to:

  • Follow multi-step directions
  • Manage time within structured limits
  • Take responsibility for materials
  • Work independently and collaboratively
  • Transition smoothly between activities

These executive functioning skills are critical in elementary school settings.

Extending Choice at Home

Families in Bellevue and surrounding Eastside communities can encourage independence with simple strategies:

  • Offer two structured options (“Would you like to wear the blue shirt or the green one?”)
  • Create a small after-school activity board
  • Encourage children to choose a book for bedtime
  • Allow participation in simple household decisions

Providing guided choices builds confidence while maintaining clear boundaries.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
