Sharing Home Languages in Bellevue Classrooms: Songs and Greetings

Get In Touch

Bellevue and the greater Eastside are beautifully diverse communities. In many households across North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside neighborhoods, children grow up hearing more than one language at home. At Lil’ People’s World, we celebrate this diversity by welcoming home languages into our classrooms through songs, greetings, and daily interactions.

In our infant care, toddler program, preschool, and pre-K classrooms, language is more than communication — it’s connection. Through our research-based Creative Curriculum, we support whole-child development while honoring each family’s cultural and linguistic background.

Why Home Language Matters in Early Childhood

Research consistently shows that maintaining and celebrating a child’s home language supports:

  • Stronger cognitive development
  • Enhanced problem-solving skills
  • Greater social-emotional confidence
  • Stronger family bonds
  • Improved long-term academic success

When children hear their home language respected at school, they feel seen, valued, and secure. That sense of belonging is essential for healthy development.

The Power of Greetings

Simple greetings can have a powerful impact. In our Bellevue classrooms, teachers may greet children with:

  • “Good morning” in English
  • “Hola”
  • “你好 (Nǐ hǎo)”
  • “안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo)”
  • “Bonjour”

Even learning to say a child’s name correctly and respectfully builds trust. For toddlers and preschoolers, these small gestures reinforce identity and belonging.

Greeting rituals also support:

  • Language awareness
  • Pronunciation skills
  • Cultural appreciation
  • Social confidence

Using Songs to Celebrate Language Diversity

Music is one of the most effective ways young children learn language. Songs help with:

  • Vocabulary development
  • Rhythm and phonological awareness
  • Memory and sequencing
  • Emotional expression

In circle time, we may include simple songs in multiple languages — especially when they reflect the backgrounds of the children in our classroom.

Examples include:

  • Counting songs in different languages
  • Simple lullabies shared by families
  • Action songs that include gestures
  • Welcome songs that rotate languages each week

When children hear familiar words from home during school, their confidence grows.

How Sharing Home Language Supports Kindergarten Readiness

Some families worry that speaking multiple languages might delay English development. In fact, the opposite is often true. Strong skills in a home language can support:

  • Literacy development
  • Vocabulary growth
  • Listening comprehension
  • Cognitive flexibility

Kindergarten teachers value children who can:

  • Communicate confidently
  • Listen carefully
  • Show curiosity about others
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness

Multilingual experiences help build these strengths naturally.

How Families Can Participate

We encourage families in Bellevue and surrounding communities to share their home language in simple ways, such as:

  • Teaching us a greeting
  • Sharing a favorite childhood song
  • Sending in a short voice recording
  • Providing a translated phrase for classroom display
  • Participating in cultural celebrations

Family partnerships are at the heart of high-quality childcare and early learning programs.

Supporting Language Development at Home

Parents and caregivers can nurture bilingual or multilingual growth by:

  • Speaking their strongest language confidently
  • Reading books in their home language
  • Singing traditional songs
  • Telling family stories
  • Encouraging conversation at mealtime

Consistency and pride in your home language strengthen your child’s identity and communication skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will learning two languages confuse my child?

No. Young children are naturally wired to learn multiple languages. Temporary mixing of words is developmentally normal.

Should we switch to English only before kindergarten?

Not necessarily. Maintaining your home language supports long-term academic and cognitive development.

How does your program support language diversity?

We integrate inclusive practices into daily routines, songs, greetings, and classroom materials while maintaining strong English literacy development.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
