Summer Readiness for Pre-K Graduates in Bellevue

Get In Touch

Summer is an exciting transition time for Pre-K graduates across Bellevue, North Seattle, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities. Whether your child will attend kindergarten in the fall or continue in a school-age program, summer offers wonderful opportunities to build confidence, independence, and readiness — all while having fun.

At Lil’ People’s World, we support families through every stage of early learning, including the all-important transition from Pre-K to kindergarten. Here’s how you can help your soon-to-be kindergartener stay engaged, curious, and prepared all summer long.

Celebrate the Growth Your Child Has Made

Pre-K graduates have worked hard all year building social skills, early literacy, pre-math understanding, and emotional regulation. Before jumping into summer routines, take time to recognize:

  • Their progress and milestones
  • New friendships
  • Favorite projects or classroom experiences
  • Skills they’re proud of

Celebrating their achievements boosts confidence — a key ingredient for a smooth transition to kindergarten.

Keep Routines Relaxed but Consistent

Over the summer, children thrive with routines that are flexible yet predictable. Consider keeping:

  • Regular wake-up and bedtime schedules
  • Set mealtimes
  • Daily outdoor play
  • Quiet time for reading or rest

Maintaining consistency helps prevent back-to-school anxiety and makes the September transition much smoother for Bellevue families.

Build Kindergarten-Ready Skills Through Play

Your child doesn’t need worksheets to stay ready for school — playful hands-on activities work best.

Literacy & Language

  • Read together every day
  • Visit local Bellevue libraries for summer reading programs
  • Encourage storytelling during car rides or walks

Math & Problem-Solving

  • Count objects while playing outside
  • Sort toys by size or color
  • Explore patterns with sidewalk chalk

Fine Motor Skills

  • Practice cutting with child-safe scissors
  • Build with small blocks
  • Try simple crafts or drawing prompts

These daily activities support the foundation your child built during Pre-K and align well with kindergarten readiness expectations.

Encourage Independence

Kindergarten teachers often emphasize independence. Summer is the perfect time to practice skills like:

  • Putting on shoes and jackets
  • Opening snack containers
  • Cleaning up toys
  • Asking for help politely
  • Carrying their own backpack

These small steps build confidence and reduce stress during the first few weeks of school.

Foster Social-Emotional Readiness

Kindergarten success depends heavily on a child’s ability to:

  • Share and take turns
  • Manage emotions
  • Follow routines
  • Work with peers
  • Persist through challenges

You can support this by offering cooperative games, talking about feelings, modeling patience, and giving gentle guidance during conflicts.

Explore the Outdoors — Bellevue Style

Bellevue and the greater Eastside offer countless outdoor learning opportunities. Nature-based activities help children:

  • Strengthen motor skills
  • Build problem-solving abilities
  • Practice curiosity and observation

Try visiting neighborhood parks, walking trails, splash pads, or beaches. Outdoor exploration supports the Creative Curriculum approach your child experienced in Pre-K.

Prepare for Kindergarten Gradually

Toward late summer, slowly introduce kindergarten readiness routines:

  • Visit the new school or playground
  • Practice packing a backpack
  • Read books about starting kindergarten
  • Re-establish earlier bedtimes
  • Talk positively about what kindergarten will be like

These gentle preparations help reduce anxiety and spark excitement.

Consider a Summer Program for Continued Growth

Many Bellevue parents choose summer programs to help their Pre-K graduate:

  • Stay socially connected
  • Maintain routines
  • Continue learning through play
  • Build confidence in group settings

High-quality summer care supports a smooth and joyful transition to kindergarten.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
