Toddler Program North Seattle: Social–Emotional Skills That Stick

Get In Touch

The toddler years are full of big emotions, new friendships, and important developmental milestones. In a high-quality toddler program in North Seattle, children learn more than just colors and numbers — they begin developing the social–emotional skills that shape how they interact with others for years to come.

At Lil’ People’s World, our toddler classrooms focus on helping children build confidence, empathy, and communication skills through daily routines and guided play. Serving families across North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities, our programs support whole-child development and prepare children for future success in preschool and beyond.

Why Social–Emotional Skills Matter in the Toddler Years

Social–emotional development refers to a child’s ability to understand feelings, build relationships, and manage behavior in group settings.

During the toddler stage, children begin learning how to:

  • Express emotions with words
  • Recognize others’ feelings
  • Share toys and take turns
  • Follow simple routines and expectations
  • Build friendships and cooperate with peers

These skills are essential for success in preschool, kindergarten, and later school environments.

At Lil’ People’s World, our Creative Curriculum integrates social–emotional learning into everyday classroom experiences.

What Social–Emotional Learning Looks Like in a Toddler Classroom

Young children learn social skills through daily interactions with teachers and peers. In our North Seattle toddler program, educators create opportunities for children to practice these skills throughout the day.

Guided Play and Cooperation

During playtime, teachers help children learn how to interact positively by modeling language such as:

  • “Can I have a turn?”
  • “Let’s share the blocks.”
  • “How can we help our friend?”

These simple interactions teach cooperation and build confidence in social situations.

Naming and Understanding Feelings

Toddlers are just beginning to understand their emotions. Teachers support this by helping children recognize and label feelings.

For example, a teacher might say:

  • “I see you’re feeling frustrated.”
  • “You look happy with your tower.”
  • “Your friend is sad — how can we help?”

This helps children build emotional awareness and empathy.

Consistent Daily Routines

Predictable routines give toddlers a sense of security and help them understand expectations.

Typical routines include:

  • Morning greetings
  • Group circle time
  • Shared snack or meal times
  • Outdoor play
  • Storytime and quiet rest

These routines help toddlers practice cooperation, patience, and independence.

Comfort and Self-Regulation

Toddlers sometimes need help calming their bodies and emotions. Teachers guide children through strategies like:

  • Deep breathing
  • Quiet spaces for calming down
  • Gentle redirection to new activities

These experiences help children develop self-regulation, an important life skill.

How Social Skills Prepare Children for Preschool

When toddlers develop strong social–emotional skills, they enter preschool ready to:

  • Participate in group activities
  • Communicate their needs clearly
  • Build friendships with peers
  • Follow classroom routines
  • Solve simple problems with guidance

These skills help children feel confident and comfortable in structured learning environments.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
