Whole-Child Development: Cognitive, Physical, and Social Growth

Get In Touch

When parents search for a high-quality childcare or preschool program, they often focus on academics. While early literacy and math skills are important, strong early learning programs also focus on something broader: whole-child development.

At Lil’ People’s World Early Learning Centers, we believe children grow best when all areas of development are supported. Our programs serving North Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, and nearby Eastside communities nurture cognitive, physical, and social-emotional growth, helping children build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

What Is Whole-Child Development?

Whole-child development means supporting every aspect of a child’s growth, not just academic learning. In early childhood education, this includes:

  • Cognitive development (thinking and problem-solving)
  • Physical development (movement and coordination)
  • Social and emotional development (relationships and self-awareness)

When these areas develop together, children become more confident learners who are ready for future challenges in school and life.

At Lil’ People’s World, our programs use the Creative Curriculum, a research-based approach that encourages exploration, discovery, and hands-on learning.

Cognitive Development: Building Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Cognitive development focuses on how children think, learn, and understand the world around them.

Young children develop cognitive skills through exploration, play, and guided activities. In our preschool and pre-K programs, children strengthen these abilities through activities such as:

  • Storytime and early literacy experiences
  • Building with blocks and problem-solving challenges
  • Exploring science and nature
  • Counting and sorting games
  • Creative projects that encourage imagination

These experiences help children develop curiosity, memory, reasoning, and early academic skills that support kindergarten readiness.

Physical Development: Strength, Coordination, and Movement

Physical development is essential during the early years. Children need opportunities to move, explore, and develop both gross motor and fine motor skills.

Gross motor skills involve large movements such as running, climbing, and jumping. Fine motor skills involve smaller movements such as drawing, writing, and manipulating small objects.

Our early learning programs encourage physical development through:

  • Outdoor play and active movement
  • Climbing, balancing, and coordination activities
  • Art and craft projects that strengthen hand muscles
  • Building and puzzle activities
  • Music and movement exercises

These experiences help children develop strength, coordination, and confidence in their abilities.

Social and Emotional Growth

Learning how to interact with others is one of the most important parts of early childhood development. Social-emotional skills help children form relationships, express feelings, and manage challenges.

In our classrooms, children practice important social skills such as:

  • Sharing and taking turns
  • Expressing emotions with words
  • Showing kindness and empathy
  • Building friendships
  • Working together in group activities

Teachers guide children through these experiences while creating a supportive environment where children feel valued and understood.

The Role of Play in Whole-Child Learning

Play is one of the most powerful tools in early childhood education. Through play, children naturally develop cognitive, physical, and social skills at the same time.

For example:

  • Building a tower with blocks develops problem-solving and fine motor skills
  • Playing with classmates encourages communication and cooperation
  • Outdoor games support physical strength and coordination

The Creative Curriculum integrates purposeful play into daily activities, allowing children to learn in ways that feel natural and engaging.

Creating a Balanced Learning Environment

At Lil’ People’s World, our classrooms are designed to support all aspects of development. Families touring our centers often notice learning spaces that encourage exploration and creativity.

Our classrooms include:

  • Reading and literacy areas
  • Art and creative expression stations
  • Building and construction centers
  • Sensory and science exploration spaces
  • Safe outdoor play areas

These environments allow children to explore their interests while developing important skills.

Partnering With Families

Whole-child development works best when families and educators collaborate. Parents play an important role in reinforcing learning experiences at home.

Families can support development by:

  • Reading books together daily
  • Encouraging outdoor play and physical activity
  • Talking with children about their feelings
  • Providing opportunities for creative expression
  • Asking open-ended questions that encourage curiosity

These everyday interactions help children continue learning beyond the classroom.

Pre-School Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Pre-Schoolers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

Creative Curriculum for preschool is a comprehensive, science based, early childhood education curriculum that has demonstrated through studies to have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s classroom conduct, as well as improvements to cognitive and social-emotional development.

Creative Curriculum promotes positive physical, social, and cognitive outcomes for children through a variety of activities including fine motor, large motor, sensory, art, dramatic play, and science activities.

Toddler Curriculum

We use a teaching strategy called, “Creative Curriculum,” when educating our Toddlers. Creative Curriculum primarily focuses on:

The goal of our toddler curriculum is to help children develop both their body and their minds in a safe and healthy place. These early, positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take joy in their day-to-day discoveries.

Examples of their day-to-day activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.

Infant Curriculum

Our daily infant curriculum is broken up into four categories of development:

01
Physical Experience
To assure our infants reach their appropriate physical development milestones, we employ our Physical Experiences curriculum. Physical Experiences utilizes motor activities that focus on both large and small muscle development.
02
Listening and Talking Experience
Before the age of one, infants are learning to understand the things that we are saying. For this reason, we provide a Listening and Talking Experience, which includes reading books, singing songs, and talking about the surroundings to aid in their communication development.
03
Creative Experience
Creative Experience allows infants to explore the many beauties that arts and crafts expose our minds to. The process of ‘art with infants’ enables our children to explore and experiment with different smells, textures, and artistic tools as a means of facilitating an early understanding of creative thought and design.
04
Learning From the World
Learning from the World introduces the infant to the world around us, allowing us to aid in their sensory development within a free, yet controlled environment. Examples of these activities can be found in the weekly sample schedule included below.
